Who You’ll Be Working With
Meet the Carus Project Managers you’ll work alongside to deliver our commercial painting projects.
Years ago, when Matt finished school, he set out to photograph the world, using working as a painter to pave the way. 20 years later, though still with a great eye for photography, painting has firmly turned into a career. He’s done everything from being on the tools, to running his own business with a contract to a nationwide group of day-care centres – and most recently managing a large-scale project of exterior painting and roof replacements for Kainga Ora at Spotless. When he is not working, beach trips, camping, bike rides, fishing… if it’s out-doors (and with his family), you name it and he’s into to it – and with application of a work ethic that stems from his favourite quote “Either you run the day, or the day runs you.”, you can be sure that ultimately any activity or project that Matt is involved in, is going to be well under control.
When Freeman put down his tools and took this job, he knew there would be changes – first and foremost, his three pies a day ‘painter’s diet’. We think that’s a pretty impressive pie tally, given that he’s been in the industry for more than 30 years. All that experience means that he’s been there, done that, and knows all the tricks. He’s a big believer in straight talk and will be the first to admit if he doesn’t know something. In his spare time – wait, there’s no such thing for Freeman. A machine in constant motion, Freeman is into boogie boarding, family camp outs and yoga, and is still rocking around obscure spots in Auckland on his skateboard. He’s started taking his son Quinn along, and is getting nervous at how good the young fella is getting…
Born and raised in Glasgow, and with an accent that is still as strong as the day he left those fair shores, you may have to ask our Waikato Project Manager to slow down a bit the first time he bends your ear – but once you’re tuned in you will learn pretty quickly that Mark Crosgray is the real deal. 26 years of industry experience, beginning with painting actual, real-life, castles back in Scotland have seen Mark paint almost anything you can think of. Outside of work, he’s a Glasgow Rangers fan through and through – and against his better judgment even manages to get out still and play a bit of the ‘beautiful game’ himself. The self-proclaimed BBQ King of Carus, Mark loves to get on those tools as well, always making sure the team is well looked after when it comes to putting kai in bellies. Maybe if your next project comes his way you can talk him into firing it up for you and your team too?
With 10 years of experience in the painting industry, plus nearly three years as a paint representative, Bay of Plenty Project Manager Johnny ensures your projects are in safe hands from start to finish. His hands-on background gives him a strong understanding to deliver the highest quality for your projects. When he’s not out on site, Johnny spends his weekends outdoors, watching sport, playing the occasional game of touch rugby, or making the most of good weather with some fishing or freediving, despite a slight fear of great white sharks. Motivated by the quote “you miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take”, Johnny is a driven member of the Carus team, focused on keeping projects in the Bay of Plenty running smoothly.
With several years in the painting industry, Todd brings valuable industry experience to Carus, from mixing paints and managing deliveries to working as a sales representative in the architectural coatings sector. His background gives him a well-rounded understanding of both products and client needs when managing projects. Outside of work, cricket is a huge part of Todd’s life, whether it’s representing Napier Tech or Hawke’s Bay in the summer, or keeping sharp with indoor cricket through the winter. When not on the pitch, he enjoys golf, watching just about any sport, and making the most of the Hawke’s Bay sunshine with his two dogs. Inspired by a quote from LeBron James, “you have to accept failure to get better,” he’s always motivated to learn, improve, and make the most of every day. We're excited to have Todd on board. He's a fantastic addition to the Carus Team.
Meet Christiaan Marsters, a professional with nearly 20 years in the insurance repair industry. Before Carus, he managed roofing operations, delivering top-notch service. He believes meticulous preparation is key to success. Outside work, Christiaan is a family man and a golf enthusiast, playing most weekends with his aspiring professional son. He also manages the Wellington Men's Golf Team, showing leadership both on and off the green. Christiaan's passion for his role and golf drives him daily. He lives by the mantra, "The worst day golfing is better than the best day working," and only fears not being able to play. A humorous note: he once painted the wrong house's ceiling due to a job sheet typo, which the homeowner quietly accepted. With Christiaan, you get experience, dedication, and a touch of humor, ensuring exceptional results and a positive experience.
If you listen you will detect a (not so slight) Californian accent when talking to Tyler – though having moved here when he was still in his late teens, he hasn’t looked back since. Having recently been made a father he is quickly discovering that his work as Project Manager makes that mahi look like a walk in the park. When he is not spending time with his family or making sure your projects come in on time and on budget, you may also find Tyler on the golf course – unfortunately though, the fact that Tyler rhymes with Tiger doesn’t seem to help when it comes to consistency around the greens.
With a lifelong career in the painting industry, Scott brings extensive experience and strong leadership to his role at Carus. Starting out as an apprentice in New Zealand, he later moved to Australia, where he held foreman, project management, and operations roles before running his own painting business. After returning home to focus on family, Scott balanced life as a stay-at-home dad while managing his small business. An early riser who hits the gym before sunrise, he lives by the motto “Do it now!”, a reflection of his proactive, can-do attitude. Outside of work, weekends are spent with family, at kids’ activities, or catching a rugby game. Scott is a valued member of the Carus team, bringing energy, expertise, and a commitment to getting the job done right.
